About the Run
The Omicron chapter of Phi Gamma Delta created Fiji's Run Across Virginia
in the Fall of 2003 in hopes of tying together two of our greatest passions: sports and charity.
Our vision was that Fiji and the large-scale selflessness exhibited by the Run Across Virginia
would someday become synonymous in the minds of brothers and the public alike. We hoped that this
association, among its many other benefits, might serve to erase some of the negative stereotypes
fraternities carry. Furthermore, there was no organization more worthy of our service than the Jimmy V Foundation.
Starting around noon on the day before the UVa vs. Virginia Tech football game,
Fiji brothers from the University of Virginia
and Virginia Tech chapters will run the official game ball from Charlottesville to the opening
kickoff for the annual grudge match between these two ACC rivals. To accomplish
this feat, Fiji brothers will be running nonstop over 158 miles for more than 24 hours.
The football run culminates with a presentation of the game football and a check to The V Foundation
at the center of the stadium just before the kickoff of the game between the Cavaliers and the Hokies.
All funds that are raised by this event are donated directly to the Jimmy V Foundation for
Cancer Research.
Our efforts in the first eight years of this event have brought in over $250,000 in donations, and each year support for the Run has increased.
We have captured the award for Best Fraternity Philanthropy for six of the last seven years, and have been awarded the Best Philanthropy Event
at the University of Virginia in years past. The Run has garnered university, local, and national media attention over the past few years, including
segments featured on ESPN in 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2009. Realizing that we are on the verge of establishing a special, long-term tradition, we strive
to create partnerships with companies that can help us achieve our goals now and in the years to come.
With the help of everybody's individual effort, we hope to make this year the best one yet.
